This week American Express released its insights data for
the quarter. The data was based on analysis of consumer
research Conducted by Galaxy Research. The Association
did a lot of media around the data in return for the
sponsorship support that AMEX provides.
Key outcomes of the data include:
Significant increases in the appetite for healthy options
and a marked decline in diners ordering gourmet meals
(40%), desserts (39%) and fast food (37%).
Increased their consumption of healthy meals (35%
increase over the past 12 months than Victorians (17%
eating more).
Western Australian’s aged 50 and older are choosing
healthier meals (35%) and eating more salads (35%)
than their 18-24 year old West Australian counterparts,
with only 12% choosing to eat more salads and 22%
more healthy meals when eating out.
In New South Wales it is the 18-34 year olds that are choosing healthy meals (33%) or salads (25%) when
eating out, compared to the over 50 year olds with only (12%) choosing to eat more salads and 18% more
healthy meals.
Western Australia is one of the healthier states, choosing to eat more salad (25%) and healthier meals (29%)
when eating out.
Victorian males are eating more healthy meals (21%) than Victorian females (14%) when eating out.
More men are choosing to eat healthy meals when eating out in Victoria and New South Wales compared to
women, while in South Australia and Queensland it is the women who are choosing to eat healthy meals. In
Western Australia it is almost evenly split, with men and women both choosing healthy meal options when
eating out; and
South Australians aged 35-49 are predominantly less likely to eat more salads when dining out, dropping
significantly from 21% in the 18-34 year age group to 11% for those aged 35-49 years.
Only 11% of respondents claimed they had increased their ordering of vegetarian meals over the past 12
months
